Sriram Moorthy ~ Ayurveda Practitioner, Founder VED Living

Sriram Moorthy

Sriram approaches life as one of non-conflict, a way of living where one's state of being, outlook in life, physical health and emotional wellness are aligned. He believes that physical and emotional imbalances are communicated by sensations and feelings in the body. By addressing these sensations, the body, mind and spirit open up to new possibilities. Sriram eats healthy foods, exercises regularly, practices deep breathing techniques and approaches life by embracing both the bad and the good. He strives to inspire others to live life with this same passion.

Sriram was in the telecom industry for 15 years. While working at Samsung, he was the lead member of the team that designed and implemented the world's first global mobile phone. As an independent consultant, Sriram worked with Taxi and Limousine Commission at the City of New York on strategies to provide field mobile phones to their police force. He enjoyed his career but his real passion was in spirituality, health and wellness. In 2011, he quit his telecom profession and enrolled in a two year program in Ayurveda at the Dinacharya Institute in NY. He has since traveled extensively in India and US. He has consulted with scientists and professors regarding the design and development of an Ayurvedic computer model for health and wellbeing and has worked with physicians to build Ayurvedic profiles of foods, exercise and lifestyle activities. In 2013, Sriram started VED living to educate people in ways to reconnect through Ayurveda with themselves and create their own path to a healthy and happy life.

Karen Betten ~ MSN, AdvCBP, Nurse Practitioner, Founder Limitless Living

Karen Betten
MSN, AdvCBP, Nurse Practitioner
Founder Limitless Living

I am a Registered Nurse. I am an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. I am also a certified BodyTalk practitioner, Yuen Method practitioner and Franklin Method Instructor. I have 27 years of experience in the field most of us refer to as health and wellness.  The question most people ask me is “What made you leave medicine?”. In short, my answer to that is this: I have not left medicine, but rather expanded the structure that most of the medical field utilizes to support the human mind & body to experience ease, health and abundance.  My medical knowledge and experience continue to be a powerful source of inspiration even though I no longer practice its structure of “diagnosis and treatment”.

The five years I spent working in the Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania set the stage for my eventual interest in and study of quantum potential and energy medicine.  I remember my intrigue packaged in fear during a newly added elective in Alternative Medicine in my graduate nursing studies at Penn.  The instructor was passionate, yet grounded and provided a broad overview of a large variety of modalities that were exploding in 1996. However, I can still feel my fear and trepidation as if it were yesterday …what is this thing we call energy?  If I cannot touch it, is it really real and how could it be utilized with reliability?  As a nurse, I was intimately aware of the power of a hunch and a gut feeling.  I had witnessed it save lives many times. But, I was also rooted in a paradigm that relegated this hard to quantify sense to a category of unreliable at best.

My early years in the healthcare field were shrouded in a belief that there was a “right” and a “wrong” path for each patient and with the proper intellectual analysis we could guide the patient on the so-called “right path”.  However, my move to the surgical trauma Intensive Care Unit (ICU) began to challenge the tenants of this philosophy.  Near death patients were an everyday thing and decisions for these patients were more likely to be of an intuitive/feeling nature given the emergent conditions.  The chosen interventions and outcomes were all too often inexplainable by the rational mind.  The pull to do one intervention over another could be likened to the experience of “being in the zone” in sports.  One was more intuitively led to the action in the fast-paced life and death environment of a trauma ICU.  The response of a patient was individual and more unpredictable than the traditional cause and effect philosophy that dominates in other less acute areas of care.

I distinctly remember one patient that had undergone surgery for esophageal cancer. The surgeon was one of the few who did this procedure in the country at the time, so people traveled from all over to be in his care.  This patient was in his late 30’s and was a father of 3 young children.  He was assigned to me as my primary patient.  The energy around him was surreal.  It became clear from the minute he arrived on our floor after his surgery that something was amiss with his recovery.  The surgeon could not understand it.  Medically speaking he had no reason not to walk out of the hospital and live “at least another year or so”.  The imminent death was devastating to this surgeon and he spent much more than his usual amount of time on our floor with the family and the patient.    If there was no medical reason he was not recovering was he “giving up”?  How could he give up?   My time with this man expanded my view of life, death and choice forever. He never left the hospital, yet he opened my soul to the deep complexities and power of the human spirit.  He was a truly beautiful, wise man.  Words cannot capture this experience, particularly words such as right and wrong.

It is this complexity and its impact on health, wellness and recovery that I was drawn to continue to explore.  I loved being a nurse.  I loved getting to know each patient and their amazingly diverse expressions of this life, the aspects of each person that is beyond what any words can capture.  The light that emanates from one’s eyes when sharing a laugh or reminiscing in a fond memory even when faced with life-threatening trajectories.  What comforts one patient is vastly different than what might comfort another and it is often not rational.  What feeds one person’s soul might very well starve another person’s soul.  And, the factors and influences that determine these experiences are truly limitless.   I had a hunch that these factors and influences were an untapped well of power that could drastically impact and enrich the lives of not just the patients on their death beds, but also those proudly in the so-called healthy category as well.

My understanding of the whole person has drastically expanded beyond the physical focus of allopathic medicine to such powerful factors as memories, beliefs, attitudes, expectations, projections, emotions and environment as well as ancestral, community, religious and familial energies, thought patterns, traumas and beliefs.  I have come to recognize that we are so much more than physical beings and our experiences with health and wellness are limited at best when we do not include the non-physical factors such as the above list in the equation.

My path of inquiry into the vast multi-dimensional aspects of the human experience has been colorful and rich.  I have explored medicine, religion, diet, nutrition and a multitude of alternative practices to support the digestion and assimilation of my experiences with life, death, illness, recovery, suffering and joy.  Limitless Living is the product of this assimilation.  This living and breathing community is a vehicle for me to share the latest science, methodologies, philosophies and personal experiences that I have found to support humanity as a whole to live a life that is deeply aligned with the individual unique multi-dimensional spirit of each human.

Shale Maulana ~ Reiki Healer

Shale Maulana

I grew up in Seattle in the shadow of Mount Rainier. As a teenager, I sipped black coffee and listened to grunge music. I moved to Atlanta after finishing college, trading in black coffee for sweet tea. I worked in bars, cafes, and restaurants while exploring independence and a new city. After a few years, I was ready to move forward in my professional development and moved to Philadelphia for graduate school, and to be closer to The Roots, the band I adored. I lived in Philly for three years, completed grad school and slid into the deepest pit of despair. There were many things that took me to this place - working too hard, drinking too much, not sleeping enough, eating the wrong foods, and most of all not valuing myself or my time. I struggled for many years with severe depression, anxiety, and a painful digestive disorder. There were times I was sure I wouldn’t make it. There were times I planned for my death. There were times I cried until my eyes ran out of tears. There were times when I wished I could cry but was too numb. There were days and weeks I could barely leave my bed.

I moved to Brooklyn with $200 in my bank account, a good friend, and a patchy plan to make it work. I would never recommend to anyone to move to New York City during the worst time of your life, but this was my path. I was terrified, but more scared of the thoughts in my head than what could happen to me in the city. I committed to myself that I would get well, whatever that meant, and however I could. Getting my feet on the ground was my first step to recovery. After about a year of hustling, I finally found myself on solid ground with a full-time job in my field and stable housing. I started juicing and drinking smoothies and improving my eating habits.

I started going to yoga class. Yoga was a bridge that brought me back to myself. It gave me something to hold onto - when there was little I could control in my chaotic life, I had my yoga practice. It gave me an anchor and helped me to begin the process of healing my body, mind and spirit.

I began to study mindfulness. I devoured books on healing and personal development. I started spending time in nature, taking long walks in parks and going on hikes when I could. Slowly, I started to recover. I started to laugh again. I started to do things just for fun. I started to be active in my life, planning out things for myself that I wanted and needed. I learned to take care of myself. I learned to ask for help, and how to receive it. I learned how to say no. I made new friends. I learned how to love myself, actively and proactively. I found my way back to health through holistic nutrition, herbal medicine, Reiki, and meditation among other healing modalities. I have deep gratitude for every single struggle I have been through, for each one has taught me invaluable lessons.

I began to receive Reiki treatments as a complement to the healing process underway in my life. A friend recommended it to me, and at the time, I had no idea what it was or how it worked. Although skeptical at first, I decided to give it a try. After my first session, I felt happy, relaxed, and left with a strong sense that something profound had shifted in me for the better. My skepticism evaporated as I could feel the energy shifts happening, and could see changes in my mood, my energy, and quality of sleep after just a few treatments. I felt joyful, calm, deeply connected and vibrant after a few months of regular treatments.

I became an eager student of Reiki, and received training and Reiki attunements to be able to share  Reiki with others. I began to incorporate Reiki as one of the many modalities I use for personal wellness and healing. It is as profoundly healing as it is gentle. It is one of my greatest joys to share this beautiful, gentle, sacred healing practice with friends, family, and clients.
